About Me

Sheila Portrait

Hello my name is Sheila, and I just wanted to give you a bit of background about myself, and why I decided to embark on this artistic venture.

I have had a passion for art and a love of animals all of my life. After gaining my Art and Education degree back in 2003 from Chester University I worked locally in a few art galleries and taught ceramic painting before relocating and moving to Yorkshire. This is when I settled down, got a “proper” job and started a family, including adopting two RSPCA collie dogs, Molly and Marvin. As a consequence my creativity as a painter then had to take a back seat for a while. But in recent times a friend of mine sadly lost her pet dog and as she was so upset I decided to paint her a surprise portrait of him. When I gave it to her the next week she was so happy and grateful. The joy this gave my friend planted a seed in my mind and rekindled my painting desires after the short sabbatical for family life.

Then tragically one of our family dogs, Molly became sick and passed away, I was so devastated I picked up my paint brush and started painting her. It was my way of giving her the respect she deserved for the years of happiness she gave us and it was also a way to give our family a permanent and much treasured memory of her.

I want to bring this happiness to everyone I paint for, a fresh clean and contemporary approach. I want to not just recreate a picture but to bring the individual character of the pet to the canvas. For this reason I ask for several pictures and good communication, no one knows your pet better than you so I would like to hear about them from you.

Ordering Process

choose photograph

Step 1 : Photo(s) Choice

This is one of the more important stages in the whole commission process, the choice of photographs.

The primary photograph can be a favourite, special one that maybe sums up a remarkable moment. This is the one the portrait will be based upon, but it’s ok to send many as you feel fit, as I can then get a feel of their personality and character. Obviously focus is crucial, and the subject taken preferably at eye level, and if possible an outdoors one in sunlight or natural lighting filtering in is also a desired preference.

I’d also prefer all photographs to be sent by email if at all possible, and we will do our best to return them along with the portrait on completion if required.

choose size

Step 2 : Choose Painting Size

The next step is to choose exactly the size of your portrait. The options are detailed on my prices page, with the various combinations for content and size. Also it’s important to say what aspect is required, landscape or portrait, although this may largely be governed by choice of photograph and content, if more than one subject then a landscape option would be most suitable.

It’s important also to factor in if a background is to be included in the final portrait. I have not presented prices in the smaller size options for a full portrait and background as experience tells me if would not do the main subject justice really at these sizes.

If cost is the primary consideration for your portrait, then start with the size that works in your budget and we can look at what can be done. I have five standard canvas sizes I offer although I can do other sizes on request, please feel free to contact me if a custom size is required.

All the portraits are painted using the medium of acrylic paint on canvas board.

payment options

Step 4 : Pay Deposit

The next step is paying a deposit once everything is agreed and confirmed in an email. I ask for a 30% non-refundable deposit to secure you’re commission. Payment can be made by bank transfer or PayPal invoicing.

Once payment is received and cleared an email confirmation will be sent, and the commission project timeline will also be supplied to you.

The deposit will be deducted from the final invoice once the portrait has been completed.

Step 5 : Painting Review

I intend to offer upto two emails to keep you informed of progress made on the commission. This means you will have peace of mind as to the quality and that the actual portrait is moving forward.

I will always endeavour to complete on the agreed schedule, however if due to unforeseen circumstances I feel the agreed end date can’t be fulfilled, then I will inform you as soon as regards this along with potential new completion date estimates.

I am happy to listen to requests for alterations during this period, although not everything is possible, and an open mind is required until close to finishing regards these periodic progress emails.

alt

Step 6 : Final Payment

A final set of photographs will be emailed to you when I have finished, and on acceptance of this, then the final balance will need to be paid in full.

The same payment options can be utilised as previously stated.

By making this final payment, you confirm acceptance of the portrait.

Please note this payment is non-refundable.

Step 7 : Painting Delivery

As soon as final payment clears then the portrait will be safely and securely packaged for delivery. Packaging involves the following steps:

  • They are first wrapped in a defensive plastic sleeve.
  • Then contained between sheets of thick cardboard.
  • The whole package is then wrapped in a layers of bio-degradable bubble wrap.
  • The next step is that it is packaged up into a posting bag together with your receipt.
  • Finally packages will then me marked as fragile with appropriate tape.

The portrait is delivered unframed. I do not offer a framing service at this time. For a UK order there will be no additional costs for postage.

Delivery will usually be by courier for next day or if advised a suitable day so that someone will be available to accept the parcel.

If overseas order, then note also that postage is NOT inclusive of price, but this would all have been agreed and finalised before commencing portrait, to prevent any surprises. I will then inform you of when the portrait will have been dispatched and give a courier led estimate of when arrival is due for this overseas delivery.
